Cleveland , Baby/Toddler Toys

The next 6-7 weeks are going to be so busy for us.
Starting this Monday we go to Cleveland Clinic to begin the procedure for my husband's
bone marrow transplant.
Monday will be filled with meetings.
Tuesday will start the testing and lab work.
There will be numerous trips back and forth for Cardio
workup and other things. If all goes well then they will put in a catheter and harvest his good cells,
then comes the rough part,
he will receive a mega dose of chemo
that will kill off as many of the cancer cells as possible.
He will get sick.
They re-introduce his good cells.
This involves being in the hospital for about 3 weeks.
As I said there will be a lot of travel involved
and some over nights.
And folks, if you know anything about Cleveland,
you know they are in the snow belt.
They get the worst snow falls in the state.
If we have 3 feet of snow,
you can bet Cleveland has 6-8 feet.
They (who are "they" anyways?") are predicting
a very cold and snowy winter,
and I am dreading it!

Now To get to the fun stuff.
TOYS!!!!
After all, who doesn't like toys?
Baby is coming in March
and grandma is gonna make sure
that there is no lead or other strange harmful
things baby sticks in his mouth.
There won't be a recall on any of these handmade items.
First, the knitted ball.
Are any of you acquainted with this?
The pattern can be found,
here and here
The first link is a free charity pattern.
The second one is a free download on Ravelry,
which is the one I used.
The gal who made it up was right,
the easy part was the knitting, the hard part was assembling it.
Now I don't consider myself a dimwit,
but it took me well over an hour to figure it out,
even with the diagrams.

Then there is the cute little bear cupcake.
The pattern for this is in a book
called Amigurumi by Lan-Anh Bui & Josephine Wan.

And of course there are some colorful soft balls,
stuffed lightly with polyfil. The pattern for this is in the book
Cute & Easy Crochet by Nicki Trench.

And we needed to make a colorful worm,
only the worm I made has a dog face, lol,
but baby won't care.
This worm has bells inside and it jingles.
I honestly don't remember what pattern book I got this one from.

And so that is my start on making soft toys for the baby.
I have had a lot of fun doing these and plan to make more as time allows. I don't want to sound like a Scrooge, but I didn't put up a Christmas tree this year mainly because I know that I am going to be hard pressed for time. My girls have trees at their homes and we will enjoy Christmas there.
The less fuss in my life right now the better.
It has also been great peeking in on your blogs
to see all the festive things you are doing to celebrate.
I can be content with that.

  3. You and your husband will be in my thoughts as you go through this difficult time. My next door neighbor went through a bone marrow transplant a year and a half ago. She is doing fantastic and told me yesterday it feels like she never was ill, she feels great. SO I give you that to hold onto as you go through this rough patch. Keep yarn in your hand because that will keep you centered and calm.
    Hugs to you both,
    Meredith

  5. Susanne,
You two are always in my thoughts and prayers. I had Hodgkin's Disease 11 years ago and it scared me to death. My kids were 6 1/2 and 3 and I was a complete mess for a year. I was exhausted and so, so scared. My next door neighbor got Leukemia from her treatments from Hodgkin's 15 years ago, so believe me that is always in the back of my mind. We all have our things we have to go through, I hope you have friends you can talk to so that you don't just burst with worry. I am here for you if you need it, anytime.
    Hugs,
    Meredith

  6. Hi there Susanne! With all that you have going on, I thank you for your kind words. I wish you and your hubby the very best. You will get through it together. I worked for an oncologist for 9 years so I have seen this done before. Stay strong. Thinking of you and wish you the best of luck! XO
Your yarns are so cute too.
